Traveling to the Australian Snowfields

The major state capitals of Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart as well as more local airports of Launceston and Canberra are very close to the various snowfields in each state. It is not hard to find rental facilities in these cities but the easiest way to get from the airport to the snow is to hire a driver tour and let experienced drivers take you right there.

Airports closest to the Australian snowfields in New South Wales (NSW)

That really depends on the New South Wales target snow ski area or resort heading.

New South Wales (NSW) resorts - Getting to Perisher or Thredbo, CANBERRA AIRPORT in the Australian Capital Territory is the closest. On arrival in Canberra the drive distance to Thredbo is around 2.5-hours. See THREDBO GETTING HERE

The other alternatively it to fly direct to the SNOWY MOUNTAINS AIRPORT Which is near Cooma. You are able obtain information about COOMA and THREDBO

IMPORTANT It should be noted that Cooma is much closer to the Ski resorts, however it is still around a 30-minute drive. Also, this airport has very limited flights.

NSW Resorts - Perisher, Thredbo, Charlotte Pass

Canberra Airport - Approximately a 2.5-hour drive to Jindabyne, and 2.5 hours to the resorts.. Here is a little information on JINDABYNE and CHARLOTTE PASS

Sydney Airport - Travelling by air from Sydney to the Snowy Mountains, Skiers are able to fly into Snowy Mountains Airport (Cooma). QANTAS and Regional Express REX take off daily during the ski season June through to October. The travel time in the air takes an hour, and from the Snowy Mountains Airport it is a short drive to the ski resorts.

DRIVING from Sydney - Is a longer drive approximately 450-500 kilometres and that depends on the targeted resort and the route chosen. The drive time is around 5-6.5 hours.

COACH OR MININBUSES transportation from Sydney to the NSW Snowy Mountains. Travelling form Cooma Airport to the snow fields, arrangements can be made for a private transfer with a company like SNOWLINK or SNOWY MOUNTAINS SHUTTLES, for services to Perisher, Thredbo, and number of other resorts. Charter flights from Sydney to Mount Hotham Airport can be a convenient time-saving way to get to the ski resorts. Airports closest to the Australian snowfields in VICTORIA

To get to Victoria's Falls Creek, ALBURY AIRPORT would be the closest, however there is still a drive of around 1 hour 45 minutes. You are able obtain information about ALBURY - WODONGA

MT HOTHAM AIRPORT is Australia's highest commercial airport.

The airport is about 20 kilometres from the resorts. Note there are very limited commercial flights however some charter services available. Charter flights from Melnourne to Mount Hotham Airport can be a convenient time-saving way to get to the ski resorts. The flight times is around 35 to 75 minutes. That can change depending on the chosen departure airport - ESSENDON AIRPORT 35 Minutes. MOORRABBIN AIRPORT 75 Minutes.

Like MOUNT BULLER - FALLS CREEK - MT HOTHAM - Hotham being among the most well-known. Other notable resorts include MONUT BAW BAW - LAKE MOUNTAIN and DINNER PLAIN Most of these areas are able to provide a large range of experiences including downhill skiing, snowboarding and cross-country and we can not leave out tobogganing fun.
